Camping, Propane Availability and Fuel Prices in
Western Europe
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland

General information: (go to the Morocco section below for general information on Morocco)
Overnight Locations:
The following information is intended to be an addition to the existing literature on places to camp overnight in Europe. It is by no means all-inclusive, but simply lists those places we utilized. If a location is identified as an Aire, it is listed in the Aires Guide published by Vicarious Books for that country (www.VicariousBooks.co.uk). Similarly, if a location is identified as a Stellplatz, it is listed in one of the Bord Atlas Stellplatz guides (www.bordatlas.de). If our location description does not include either of these two words, that location is simply a spot we came across on our own or perhaps found based on information gathered from other travelers and is not listed in either of the guides mentioned above.
Listings are shown alphabetically by the name of the nearest town.
The numbers in parentheses indicate the (month/year) we were there.
GPS Coordinates: We have had excellent results using the GPS coordinates listed in the Aires and Stellplatz books. Many of these locations can be hard to find relying on the directions given, but by programming in the coordinates we have found each location easily. Note that the Aires and Stellplatz books each use a different GPS format. In this log we have standardized all readings to the same format. We also include elevation (in feet) for most locations.
Propane (LPG) locations:
RVs (like ours) with chassis mounted propane tank go to a different location than those with removable tanks which generally must be exchanged at exchange points rather than refilled. In some regions one type of tank may be easier to fill than the other while in other areas the reverse may be true. Needless to say, in countries where there is any question about availability we try not to let the propane level get too low before filling. We prefer our fixed tanks and think them much easier to deal with than removable tanks.
Most European countries utilize a 1 3/4” Acme thread for fixed propane tanks, with two adaptors needed to cover the whole continent. The necessary adaptors are the Italian or French Dish (same adapter called by both names) and the British Bayonet for Britain and a few other places. The 1 3/4” Acme fitting is the standard fitting on FIXED propane tanks in the US. Removable tanks have different fittings and must be handled in different ways.
Important: before you leave your home country, you should acquire an adapter that will connect to the inlet on your propane tank and then terminates in a pipe thread (of any common size) so that another fitting can be connected to the adapter. You should then obtain a 1 3/4” Acme adapter (male thread) for your first connection. Depending on which countries you visit, you should then be able to acquire a fitting that is used in a particular country once you are in that country and connect it to the fitting that fits your tank. You can also order all the adapters you will need from several online UK sources.

Fuel Prices:
These prices give the range of what we paid in each country. We have a diesel engine; the diesel prices are actual. We have included the estimated prices for regular unleaded gasoline. All fuel prices are shown with both the actual local cost and with that cost converted into US gallons and US Dollars at the time of our visit.
US Credit Cards in Western Europe: The standard European credit card has an embedded chip and uses a PIN for security. These cards do not require a signature. Most US cards continue to be based on a magnetic strip although as of 2014 that seems to be changing. We used a normal magnetic strip US card with little difficulty for four years although we could not use this card at automated fuel stations. Some folks have located credit unions in the US that will issue a chip and PIN based card and they are using them in Europe. In 2014, Chase switched our cards to a chip and signature card. This was done entirely on their initiative, not at our request. These cards have worked fine for us since we received them. Whether they will be an improvement over the magnetic strip cards remains to be seen.

Belgium:
Exchange rate in April 2010: One Euro to approximately 1.36 Dollars. In April 2012: One Euro was around $1.31.
Overnight parking regulations: Overnight stays in areas other than established campgrounds or aires is allowed. We spent about one third of our nights in such places, sometimes for more than one night.
Fuel: Fuel prices vary and are generally posted clearly; many fuel stops are automated and operate with credit card only. Diesel fuel is readily available and prices ranged from €1.05 to €1.20/liter ($5.40 to $6.20/gallon); Regular gasoline prices ranged from €1.28 to €1.48/liter ($6.60 to $7.60/gallon). Update, April 2012: Diesel prices vary from € 1.40 to €1.52/liter ($6.97 to $7.57/gallon); regular gasoline from €1.65 to €1.75/ liter ($8.21 to $8.71/gallon). In October 2014 prices had dropped significantly. Diesel fuel ranged from €1.26 to €1.38/liter ($6.20 to $6.80/gallon), with regular gasoline running about €0.20/liter ($1.00/gallon) more.
Propane: Readily available directly from many fuel stops using a 1 3/4” Acme thread connector. Propane prices ranged from €0.49 to €0.59/liter ($2.50 to $3.00/gallon). In April 2012, LPG was € 0.70 to €0.74/liter ($3.48 to $3.68/gallon). In October 2014 LPG was at €0.59/liter ($2.90/gallon).

Bastogne area Overnight Free N50 02.890 E005 44.568
Outside Bastogne, on the road between the villages of Foy and Recogne is the German cemetery. Before you get there you’ll pass a school on the left, then what appears to be a community bldg, also on the left; we stayed in the parking lot there. Another time, coming into Bastogne from the south, on the N30, we passed a large parking lot on the left with several motorhomes parked overnight; looked like a good spot. (4/10)
Bellem Overnight Free N51 05.851 E003 29.717
This Aire is northeast of Brugge, located along a canal. Leaving Bellem, head toward Ursel; before the bridge turn right, follow the road to the end, and then turn left under the bridge. Very quiet. (4/10)

Cerfontaine Overnight Free N50 11.234 E004 24.946
The Aire is located along Barages de L’Eau d’Heure, a very popular lake with lots of activities and it is very busy; it is located on the road between the dam and Fouraverve. When we arrived the Aire was full, and much too busy for our taste. We came east across the dam and continued east along a side road that went along the lake; we found an unused parking lot shortly beyond a restaurant area where we spent 2 quiet nights. At one end of the lot is a boat ramp used only by the security for the lake; they paid no attention to us. (4/10)

Ghent Overnight Free N51 02.229 E003 46.024
The Aire is located pretty much at the junction of E30/N9, in the southeast quadrant of the city, in Gentbrugge. Get off at exit 10, then get under the overpass, following the parking signs. When you get to the police station, turn left and go to the end, where there is free overnight parking; there is a dump, but no water. You can catch the bus into the Centrum by going back to the police station, turning right and walking up about 4 blocks; take the No. 3 bus and get off at St. Jacob’s church (we told the driver we wanted the Centrum and he told us where to get off). We were able to pick up weak but sufficient wifi in the parking area. (4/10) (updated 4/12)

From town follow signs to this Aire at the Barrage de la Gileppe dam; the parking lot has lots of room; no services. Very nice, in a wooded area. (4/10)
Habay-la-Neuve Overnight Free N49 44.034 E005 38.802
Coming west off the N4, as we entered town we turned right at a sign for a community sports center; no opportunity there, so we continued on this road, turning left at the next intersection, then following this road (which is marked for Vlessart) past a sports field on the left, until we came to a large open area, also on the left. Had a little trouble getting level, but had a quiet night. (5/10)

Going south from Manhay on the N50, had just passed sign to Baraque de Fraiture, coming into the ski resort area; we saw a Ski de Piste sign off to the left. We turned in, went past a large parking area that we felt was too close to the road, and proceeded down the hill for about ½ mile, to another very large parking area on the left, opposite the Ski de Piste Restaurante; very secluded. No services. (4/10)

Spa Overnight Free N50 27.601 E005 52.209 1610 ft
We drove south out of town on the road up to the Musée des Forêts; stayed at the entrance to the ski lift, about 1 km downhill from the museum. The area slopes, but were able to get pretty level. No services. The tourist office had directed us to a 24-hr parking area along Blvd des Anglais, next to the GB grocery; it is a very noisy street, so we moved on. (4/10)
Spa Internet €4/hour
We needed a good connection (better than McDonalds), and the tourist office directed us to Let’s Go Video on Rue Servais, directly behind the Casino. Were able to plug in our laptops. (4/10)
Tihange Overnight Free N50 31.981 E005 15.568
This Aire is just slightly to the east of Huy, and a quiet spot; proceed east on N90 and follow signs to Camping Mosan; the Aire is the visitor parking just before entering the campground. Free, with electric, water and dump for fee; however, when we were there, there was no water available. (4/10)

Free parking in big lot on west side of town on the ring road, opposite Place de Lille. 48 hours max (if you need a longer time, go to the tourist office and they will help you); water and dump; no electric. Walk into center. (4/10) Update: have been back two more times (11/11 and 4/12); always works well and is a great spot.
Tournai Laundry
Observed public laundry on Rue des Carmes where it joins the Grand-Place; this is the street you take to walk down to St. Jacques église from the free parking lot (see above).

France:
Exchange rate in May 2010: One Euro to approximately 1.33 USD. In October 2010 the rate was up to $1.42. In June 2011 the rate was about $1.44. In May 2014 the rate was $1.40; but by October 2014 it had fallen to $1.30.
Overnight parking regulations: Overnight stays in areas other than established campgrounds or aires are allowed. That said, there are so many Aires available for zero or low cost that we most often do stay in them.
Fuel: Fuel is more expensive than Germany, Belgium or Luxembourg. Prices varied and were posted clearly. There are two types of fuel stations, normal stations and automated or semi-automated stations that are generally affiliated with grocery stores. Diesel fuel is readily available and in May 2010, prices were €1.16 to €1.20/liter ($5.84 to $6.04/gallon). In June 2011, Diesel prices were €1.28 to €1.32/liter ($7.00 to $7.20/gallon) at the supermarket stores, but around €1.45/liter at name brand stations. Regular gasoline runs about €.20/liter ($1.09/gallon) higher. In 2014 diesel was between €1.27 and €1.32 ($6.25 to $6.50/gallon) at the discount stations and between €1.38 and €1.42 ($6.79 to $6.99/gallon) at the name brand stations. Regular gasoline continues at about €0.20/liter higher (around $1.00 per gallon).
Note regarding credit cards: France, Belgium and some Scandinavian countries present some restrictions on the use of non EU credit cards. In general these countries rely more on automated fuel stations and these stations, if no attendant is present, will not accept non EU, i.e. magnetic strip, cards. As these stations tend to offer fuel at the lowest available prices this can be an important consideration. It is now possible to obtain a European style credit card with an internal chip in place of the standard magnetic strip at a few credit unions in the US, I cannot speak to their availability in other countries. We do not have such a card, but we do manage to get virtually all of our fuel at the low cost stations simply by buying fuel when we encounter a manned station. Some stations are fully automated and are never manned, but most do have an attendant present either in a check-out booth or an attached store during business hours. At lunch time, evenings, Sundays and holidays there is often no attendant present. So, while having the new style of card can certainly be a convenience, they are not required. We did find that our magnetic strip would not work at two grocery store type stations in Brittany, we believe this is a regional issue as we had no trouble in other parts of France.
Propane: Readily available directly from many fuel stops using a 1 3/4” Acme thread connector. Propane prices are also higher than either Belgium or Luxembourg, running around €0.76/liter ($3.83/gallon).

Infernetto Overnight Free N43 56.573 E007 16.963
Above the town we stayed the night in an unused parking area on the right. The next town up toward the pass (the Col de Turini) was Lantosque. This road, the 2565 north of Nice, runs along river in a narrow gorge with very few places to stop; this is the narrowest road we’ve ever been on that had this much traffic; not fun. Note ‘Infernetto’ is the name we got from an Italian map as none of our French maps showed this town. The French name may be different. (6/11)

Germany:
Exchange rate in May 2010: One Euro to approximately 1.33 Dollars. Update 2012: In May 2012 Euro was at $1.30. Update 2013: In August 2013 Euro was at $1.34. Update spring 2014: Euro was up to $1.39. Update June 2015: Hurray! A stronger US Dollar gave us our best exchange rate in our six years in Europe: $1.12 to one Euro.
Overnight parking regulations: Overnight stays in areas other than established campgrounds or aires are allowed.
Fuel: Fuel is more expensive than either Belgium or Luxembourg and about the same as France. Compared to The Netherlands, diesel is about the same but gasoline is about €0.10/liter less expensive. Prices varied and were posted clearly. Diesel fuel is readily available and prices in 2010 were €1.16 to €1.26/liter ($5.84 to $6.34/gallon). Regular gasoline prices were around €.20/liter higher ($6.85 to $7.35/gallon). Update: in 2012 diesel was between €1.40 and €1.48/liter ($6.89 to $7.28/gallon). Regular gas was €0.15 to €0.20/liter higher ($7.63 to $8.32/gallon). Update in 2013: Diesel was between €1.39 and €1.46/liter ($7.05 to $7.40/gallon) while gasoline continued at about €0.15/liter ($0.75 per gallon) higher. Update in 2014: Diesel had dropped some to between €1.31 and €1.40/liter ($6.89 to $7.37/gallon), with gasoline continuing around €0.15 ($0.79/gallon) higher. Update 2015: Due to lower fuel costs worldwide and the stronger Dollar, we paid $2.00 less per gallon of fuel this year than in 2014. Diesel was only about €1.19/liter ($5.02/gallon), gasoline continued higher by about the same margin.
Propane: Readily available directly from some fuel stops using a 1 3/4” Acme thread connector. Propane prices are also higher than either Belgium, Luxembourg or The Netherlands, though lower than France; in 2010 running around €0.65/liter ($3.27/gallon). Update 2012: propane was between €0.79 and €0.83/liter ($3.89 to $4.08/gallon). Update 2013: propane was between €0.73 and €0.79/liter ($3.70 to $4.00/gallon). Update 2014: propane prices continued unchanged. Update 2015: Again thanks to lower fuel costs worldwide and the strong US Dollar, LPG was down to €0.59/liter ($2.58/gallon).
Internet Access: Germany has less free wifi available than any other country due to a law that holds providers of wifi signals liable for internet use by all users. Even McDonalds does not provide wifi in Germany as they do in other countries, although we are told that Starbuck’s does. In 2013 we decided to look into getting a USB dongle for internet access and were able to do so from Vodafone, which was the only provider selling no contract, pay as you go plans. The dongle with sim card cost €20 on a promotion and 1gb access for 30 days was €15 - 3gb would have been €25. Update 2014: The cost of a dongle and simcard from Vodafone was considerably higher than last fall: dongle = €29.95, sim card = €10.00, 3gb service for one month €45. Ouch. Service was acceptable but not impressive.

Italy:
Exchange rate in June/July 2011: One Euro to approximately 1.43 Dollars. We returned in September/October 2013 and the rate was around one Euro to $1.37 USD.
Overnight parking regulations: Overnight stays in areas other than established campgrounds or aires are allowed. Our Italian camping guide refers to Aires as Sostas, so we have used that word for spots we located in that book. A Sosta is identical in concept to an Aire or Stellplatz. There are many sostas available; some are free while others charge, generally between €5 to €12. Many have dump, water and electric facilities; sometimes for free and sometimes at extra cost. Getting a guide to these sostas is a bit difficult; the one we use is excellent, but it dates from 2006. A new edition was done in 2012 but these are out of print and no longer available.
Fuel: Fuel is more expensive than in surrounding countries. Prices varied and were posted clearly. Diesel fuel is readily available and posted prices in 2011 were €1.30 to €1.45/liter ($7.10 to $7.90/gallon); Regular gasoline prices were €.08 to €.12/liter higher ($.45 to $.65/gallon). In 2013 prices ranged from €1.57 to €1.75 ($7.99 to $9.07/gallon) for diesel and gasoline continued to be higher by €.06 to €.10/liter ($.30 to $.50/gallon) More than in other countries we have visited, there are many stations that are self service, with no attendant at all. On Sundays or holidays, or even during the lunch period (12 to 3pm), these were often the only stations available for use. In order to used these stations you must either have a credit card that will work in them, ours do not, our use cash; most, but not all of them have machines that accept cash. Prices are considerably cheaper at these stations, by as much as €.08/liter ($.45/gallon); these stations are at the low end of the price range shown above; most of the diesel fuel we used cost between €1.38 and €1.40 per liter ($7.50 to $7.60/gallon) in 2011, while in 2013 that cost rose to around €1.65/liter ($8.56/gallon).
Propane: GPL is readily available at many fuel stations using the dish or cup adapter, often referred to as the Italian Dish. In 2011, prices ranged from €.70 to €.75/liter ($3.82 to $4.09/gallon). In 2013, prices were generally €.72 to €.79/liter ($3.73 to $4.10/liter).

Headed south from Modena into Tuscany, on SS324 (a cutover road between S12 and S64) we stopped for the night at what we thought was the town’s sosta; turns out it was simply a large parking lot for the local grammar school. Official parking area for motorhomes with dump/water/trash facilities; near the hospital; on Via Chiusaforte. Large grassy lot, some trees for shade. This is not the prettiest spot in the world, and there’s a fair amount of traffic/noise during the day; however, it’s very useful and not far from the North Udine Commercial Center, which has a Carrefour. It is roomy enough to allow for parking in different positions in order to take advantage of the breeze or shade from the trees.(7/11)

The old sosta has been moved, to a horribly sloping lot, although there are water and dump available there. We found a flat parking area in a nearby lot and parked there, with no trouble. There is a bus stop very close, although the bus service is quite erratic (according to the tourist office!); take the #3 bus up to the Duomo. (10/13)
Venice area Overnight Free N45 28.031 E12 12.927
This is free parking in the Panorama shopping center lot in the Marghera area. We stayed 4 nights, taking the free Panorama bus into the city some times, and using the city bus (#6/ -- be sure it says “/”) other times; both stop there. The area is a little seedy, but we felt very comfortable using this venue, and considered it a splendid opportunity. There is a tobacco shop in the Panorama shopping center; you can purchase city bus (and vaporatto) tickets and passes there. Friends have used this location for years, sometimes staying up to a week. The Netherlands:
Exchange rate in April 2012: One Euro to approximately 1.31 Dollars. Update 2014: One Euro to $1.39. Update 2015: One Euro down to US $1.12.
Overnight parking regulations: Overnight stays in areas other than officially recognized Aires or Camp Sites are officially NOT allowed in the Netherlands. To make matters even more difficult for the overland traveler, many, if not most, of the designated Aires have only two to four spaces and the Aires book states that fines may be imposed for units in addition to the allowed number. We had success in staying at private locations such as museums after asking permission to stay in their parking lot. We also found that in at least some areas the limit on the number of motorhomes was not enforced. We also saw an area that was not a designated aire where motorhomes were parked and were likely spending the night.
Fuel: Fuel prices vary and are generally posted clearly; prices are similar to adjoining Belgium. Diesel fuel is readily available and prices ranged from €1.40 to €1.49/liter ($6.97 to $7.42/gallon); Regular gasoline prices were higher than diesel and ranged from €1.74 to €1.88/liter ($8.66 to $9.36/gallon). Update 2014: Fuel prices remain largely unchanged although higher when converted to US cost due to difference in exchange rate. Update 2015: Diesel was very similar in price to Germany, just slightly higher at €1.13/liter ($4.79/gallon).
Propane: Readily available directly from many fuel stops using a 1 3/4” Acme thread connector. Propane prices ranged from €0.70 to €0.79/liter ($3.48 to $3.93/gallon).

It’s an excellent location, near the very pretty village area. We spent a quiet night with no one bothering us. Overnighting in rest areas or truck stops along major highways is NOT recommended in Portugal due to ongoing reports of theft.
Fuel: At the time of our visit fuel prices were generally higher than in neighboring Spain. Prices varied and were posted clearly. Diesel fuel is readily available and prices ranged from €1.15/liter to €1.21 ($5.96 to $6.27/gallon) for regular diesel; Regular gasoline prices were around €.20/liter ($1.00/gallon) more than regular diesel. Higher priced diesel and gasoline are also available.
Propane: Should be readily available using the 1 3/4” Acme connector. While not as common as in France for example, we have passed several stations showing GPL availability. Prices have been about €.73/liter ($3.78/gallon). For a further discussion of propane availability in Europe you will find a recent article at www.magbaztravels.com

Spain:
Exchange rate in November 2010: One Euro to approximately 1.42 Dollars. In May 2011: Rate was up to one Euro to approximately 1.48 Dollars.
Overnight parking regulations: Overnight stays in areas other than established campgrounds or aires are allowed. In areas away from major cities and highways we had no difficulty in finding suitable places to overnight. Overnighting in rest areas or truck stops along major highways is NOT recommended in Spain due to ongoing reports of theft.
Fuel: At the time of our visit fuel prices were lower than in neighboring France. Prices varied and were posted clearly. Diesel fuel is readily available and in 2010 prices ranged from €1.10/liter to €1.15 ($5.91 to $6.18/gallon) for regular diesel with premium diesel about €.04/liter more; Regular gasoline prices were around €.06/liter more than regular diesel. In May, 2011, prices were up to between €1.19 and €1.25/liter ($6.67 to $7.00/gallon)
Propane: Spain is transitioning to provide greater availability of Propane (called GPL). GPL fueling is not done at regular fuel stops, but only at a limited number of special stations with pumps for bulk filling. Such stations for filling fixed tanks are listed in Vicarious Books All the Aires in Spain & Portugal and can also be found at various online locations, including downloadable files for your GPS. We downloaded a file from www.poiplaza.com. For removable tanks, I cannot speak to filling them other than at the same facilities for fixed tanks, but exchange bottles are commonly available. Spain is also using a new style adapter for fixed tanks that at least at this time we believe is unique to Spain. However, other adaptors are also used, particularly the UK Bayonet style. The facility we used in Huelva had two dispensing pumps, one fitted with the new adaptor and one with the UK style adapter. Information from other travelers indicated that the filling stations may have various adapters available for use. We paid €0.627/liter ($3.30/gallon) at the stop in Huelva. Switzerland:
Exchange rate in May 2010: Switzerland does not use the Euro. Exchange was one Swiss Franc to approximately .89 Dollars.
Overnight parking regulations: Overnight stays in areas other than established campgrounds or aires are allowed.
Fuel: We had expected costs to be higher than other countries, but this was not necessarily the case. At the time of our visit, diesel fuel was about the same as in France and less than Germany. For the first time however, gasoline was priced less than diesel, so gas would be a relative bargain. Prices varied and were posted clearly. Diesel fuel is readily available and prices were about 1.74 swiss franc/liter ($5.86/gallon); Regular gasoline prices were around 1.66 swiss franc/liter ($5.59/gallon).
Propane: On this first short trip, we did not pass any LPG locations.
